It's interesting to look at their website and see that the tournament was posted as A and AA mite through midget and they only have a Bantam A division. It sounds to me like others may know something you're learning the hard way.
Our team did something very different this year and it turned out great. Instead of going to the for profit tournaments, we hosted three teams at our home rink. We invited in three teams, each team got to play one another one time and then we had a "championship game" for the top two teams. We charged the other teams just their share of the cost of ice and officials. The cost of the championship game was split 4 ways. We made a bit of money by running some raffles and concessions. The games were close in talent and it proved to be a great weekend for all involved. It was so successful that one of the teams we invited in, invited us to their rink for the same thing and they invited two different teams. Over the course of two different weekends, we played 5 different teams at approximately the same level. It definitely beat the average organized tournament. It also wasn't as hard to pull together as we first thought. Next year we are trying to pull together enough ice for 8 teams instead of 4 because several teams have approached us about participating.
