I have a 5 year old girl (about to be 6) who plays for the Duncanville mini-mites team out of the Duncanville Dr. Pepper Star Center. She is the only female playing in mini-mites. Our rink has none in mites, and 2 in squirts. We lost our lone female superstar (junior level) to a prep school up north - she had been playing full contact boys hockey at the high school level.
I am concerned about the future of Girls' Hockey in North Texas.... and Texas as a whole.
At some point, I am going to want my daughter to start playing hockey with and against other females. Right now, at the mini-mites level, there is little physiological difference in strength between the sexes -- generally, the older the kid, the better they are, with some exceptions.
But when she is 12 or 13, and the boys start puberty and gaining muscle mass and testosterone, I am not going to be comfortable with her playing full contact. We may have to move north to Minnesota or New Hampshire or something if Girls hockey does not greatly grow and improve in Texas.
I am interested in gathering a group of parents together, and forming a Girls Hockey Association in Texas that is dedicated to growing the game. The reality is that parents of young girls in this area are not viewing hockey as a viable athletic option for girls, and we must overcome this stereotype.
