My son is one of two goalies on a Pee Wee AA team. He has good skills and work ethic but is smaller than the other goalie. Our league games are getting underway and we are heading to a tournament in a couple of weeks. Our coach informed us that he will not be playing our son as the league games are really important. He said he is doing a good job but the other goalie is really hot right now. The coach told our son he was really good for his size. We have been down this road before a few years ago where my son sat a lot but did the right thing by keeping his attitude up, cheered for his team... etc.. but it kills me that he is in this position again. In the beginning this coach emphasized his main focus was "player development", we were all for that, knowing that USA hockey is pushing the ADM model to help develop and retain players. It is not fun for us to travel and not see our son play at all (not to mention the cost of hotel & food). I asked my son how he felt about it and he wants to stick with the team...he has many friends on the team. Do we as parents support him in that decision or try our darndest to get him on another team where he would be guaranteed 50% of the games? What is better, real player develpment, or another dose of mental toughness??
