Well so far as my first year I've been doing great. I've been playing inhouse and I've only been giving up a few goals per game and winning. I've been stopping shots from higher skilled players. However when it comes to play for the school I don't know when to go down into the butterfly or stand up for the shot. Is there a rule of thumb for this? I always go into the butterfly with shots from the slot or in close but from the point I wait to react from shots up at the blue line. I do have a good glove hand and good reflexes, but I just don't know when to go down and when to stay up. My coach tells me to stay on my feet but there are some occasions where you should go into a butterfly.
Can anybody help me out with a rule of thumb or is it just that I need more experience and practice?

Its good that your first year is going well. It is really a preference of how you play. I don't quite understand what you mean by "When it comes to play for the School." Does this mean floor hockey or Ice hockey. Since I don't know your going to have to let me know before I can help you.
The rule that I generally try to follow is the stomach rule. I try to block every puck with my stomach, as there are no holes there. If the shot appears to be going above your waist, stay up and block it in your gut. If the shot appears to be going below your waist go down and take away the bottom of the net. Ask your team mates to fire them low and high in practice and try to figure out what works good for you.
Please keep in mind that I am a hybrid goalie and what works well for me may not work well for you.
