A coach in a large mid-american organization is claiming in a Coaching Propectus that he was an assistant coach on a team that my son was on 4 years ago. The reality is that he was not offically named on the USA Hockey Official roster, and had no official intereaction with the players as a coach. He took stats, helped run the clock, and worked the penalty box which are functions that many parent volunteers do, including myself. When the parents pooled their money at the end of the year for coaches gifts, he contributed to the pot, he did not receive a gift of Thanks.

He is making the same claim as being an Assistant Coach for two other hockey seasons where he was not offically named as a coach on the USA Hockey Roster. The organization appears to be supporting this kind of misrepresentation as they have posted the Coaching Prospectus on the website. What should be done?

I would recommend contacting association board members and letting them know of the discrepancies. I wouldn't assume that they've looked at/investigated every coaching prospectus that's uploaded. Different orgs do different levels of background checks/validation of previous coaching claims, with (unfortuantely) in some organizations they may do nothing more than the minimum required by USA Hockey because coaches may be in short supply.

I also know of individuals who served more as a "volunteer assistant coach" who was on the ice for practices at times but not added to the official roster.

It's amazing how someone can come out and bash a person that is volunteering their time all while not knowing what they are talking about. I know the person you are referring to and I also know who started this post and I can tell you for fact they are wrong. The teams only list two assistants on the official roster and the organization will only pay for so many coaches per team to be screened and certified. In this case the teams have paid for this coach to be screened and certified in each of the years as this person was identified by the head coach to be an assistant coach.

Oh and by the way he was listed on at least one official roster as an assistant, if you would like to see the rosters I still have them.

Well, I'm sorry, but if this coach was a coach on my sons team 4 years ago. Then it was a well kept secret. But as I remember, the communication on that team was beyond bad. So this would be typical of the types of senarios that happen when poor communicaiton occurs between coaches and parents. Thanks for setting me straight.

1 official listing out of 5 years of coaching experience. Makes you wonder.

Hey Fan4u,

You seem like the type of parent that likes to sit back a gripe. I'm sure you would never think of getting involved and volunteering yourself. We all know the type. You begin the backbiting and second guessing in september and continue right through February.

If your not happy with a team a coach or an organization than, please, feel free to move on.

Why not try for a little positive energy for once?

You hit the nail right on the head with that one hockeydad2. Funny thing is they did leave.

Oh and the last time I checked communication was a two way street that involves listening, which was something you refused to do with any of the coaches who's teams you were involved with while you were with the organization.

You must have me confused with someone else. I left a long time ago. I volunteer all the time. And you won't find a more positive parent than me.
